It's not funny any more...

We liberals have been having a good laugh at the bumbling, apparent idiocy of our current President, George - W for Worst Ever - Bush. Sure, we've written letters and signed petitions, we gather together and talk endlessly about just how bad it is, send what money we have left to help victims of disasters and famines; we speculate on how much worse it can get... and we try to hold on until we can get this administration out and someone - hell, almost anyone - else in office. What has happened in the six years since W has been in office, and has he helped or exacerbated existing problems? He began his term with a balanced national budget. Now, we're in the greatest debt this country has ever faced, and there's no end in sight. [Deficit] It doesn't matter to W, because HE is rich. His friends are rich. His companies are rich, and his friends' companies are getting all the governmental project awards. Of course things look good to him. We're in a war which was illegal - not just unfounded, but based on lies and revenge. And our sons and daughters are dying because of it. But that's only the tip of the iceberg - that is, the shrinking icebergs in the seas - global warming. If global warming wasn't serious enough, now there's Global Dimming - which is diminishing and which was holding the warming in some semblance of check. Now I don't begin to imply that global warming is all W's fault, of course it isn't. What I do insist, however, is that he is categorically doing nothing to halt this universal problem, but is, in fact, making it worse. Day by day, and with a gleeful abandon which is nothing short of terrifying. And what about rights? Women's rights [NARAL], the rights of anyone who is not Christian [Americans United], the rights of immigrants? Georgie the fellatiator of the religious right [George and the RR], [Interfaith Alliance] cares not a whit about anyone's rights but his own... and of course, his friends, etc... as above. Shall we add intellectual pursuits to this list? Georgie thinks that 'creationism' is 'science'. He thinks 'science' is driven by the devil and needs religion - Christian religion only - to guide it. [Bush Distorts Science], [Bush/Science] 'Nuff said on that one. Good-freaking-grief. Is it really possible to have an idiot for president? Must be... George has managed, despite the world's sympathy and support after 9-11, to alienate almost every country in the world. [Bush alienates world] Unfortunately, that includes those harboring (willingly or unwillingly) those who choose to fight against any who disagree with them by the use of terrorist tactics. Clinton got a blow job while being a great president; George blows off our allies and destroys our country while proclaiming his own moral high ground. How about domestic policy? To Georgie, that means having cheap servants... he's clueless as to the other needs of the country. It's been a very long time since the chasm between the rich and everyone else has yawned so wide. There are more unemployed people - no longer on the UC rolls, so no longer counted, than since the Great Depression. What's he doing about jobs? Nada. The Truth about George Ok, well, how about honesty and integrity? Four words - 'weapons of mass destruction' clued us into how utterly mobile the interpretation of honesty and integrity is to his administration. Colin Powell left embarassed and with his tail dragging; those who can manage to swallow their own scruples in order to have a place of power, remain 'embedded' to spout Bush-platitudes in the most corrupt administration since Nixon. [NY Times] What about our health? Well, first of all we either have worthless or no health insurance, or we're paying absurd premiums to protect ourselves. [NYT editorial] Bush's great idea is to make us pay more so we shop wisely. OOOKay. And that, after we've fed ourselves a diet of garbage - so we wonder why we're all sick. For over a generation, agriculture has been using pesticides as if there was no tomorrow - and there may just be no tomorrow for us as we slowly die from the poisons we ingest daily. Fishes are poisoned in the water they live in, and cows, chickens, pigs, etc are fed antibiotics and hormones which are causing 10 yr old girls to develop breasts and begin menstruating at such an early age. Cancers abound, as does heart disease and diabetes. Immune disorders plague every family - do you know any extended family without disease? I don't. And I'm old enough to remember 50 yrs ago, when 'everyday' diseases just weren't around 'everyday'. READ The China Study. It may save your life... for now, anyway. So what are we to do? I really don't know any more. I almost wish I'd never had children - who will have to suffer the consequences of all of the above problems, and their children - will they even have a healthy and peaceful world to live in? I don't know if any of it is fixable any more. Sure, we can do a lot to stem the tide of global warming, we can stop the secondary poisoning of our society, we can even balance the budget and bring our troops home now. But will it matter? Have we gone too far? Have we, in one generation, managed to set in motion the effects which will destroy civilization? I hope not, but I just don't know.
